Most household junk and construction debris is allowed. California's hazardous waste rules and Orange County's landfill rules set the limits.
California makes it illegal to throw hazardous waste in the trash. That covers batteries, fluorescent bulbs, paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, antifreeze, electronics, and items with mercury. Asbestos and other hazardous building materials are covered too.
Orange County's Olinda Alpha Landfill also turns away tires, chemically treated wood, fuel tanks, brake linings, contaminated soil, and liquid waste. Keep those out of your container.
For household amounts of hazardous waste, Orange County runs four free collection centers in Huntington Beach, Anaheim, Irvine, and San Juan Capistrano. They're open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
