Drywall, framing, roofing, flooring, cabinets, fencing, and ordinary household junk all load without trouble. The refusals come from California first and the city landfill second.
CalRecycle keeps a list of materials banned from the trash statewide. It covers paint of either kind, solvents, pesticides, antifreeze, motor oil and filters, every size of household battery, fluorescent tubes, propane cylinders, asbestos, and tires, which the state keeps out of landfills to prevent mosquito breeding and tire fires. Electronics are on the list as well, and the state says plainly not to throw them away.
Treated wood is the one that catches remodelers out. California treats preservative-treated lumber as hazardous waste, and Lompoc charges it at a hard-to-handle rate rather than taking it as regular debris.
Hazardous waste, liquids, fuel, and solvents stay out of every standard roll-off container, in Lompoc as everywhere else.
The landfill has its own limits too. It stopped taking electronics for recycling, sending those to the city's hazardous waste facility by appointment instead, and it only accepts waste generated inside the Lompoc Valley. If an item has you guessing, ask your account manager before it goes over the side.
