Ordinary remodeling and cleanout debris is welcome. California, though, keeps a longer list out of the trash than most states do.
Batteries of every kind are banned, along with fluorescent tubes and other lamps. So are latex and oil-based paint, solvents, antifreeze, motor oil and filters, and aerosol cans that still hold product. Tires are banned from the trash as well, even though they aren't hazardous, to keep down tire fires and mosquitoes.
Electronics can't go in either. Televisions, monitors, computers, printers, microwaves, and phones are all handled as hazardous waste rather than trash, so pull them before loading day.
Two building materials catch people out. Asbestos turns up in older cement board, roofing, flooring, and siding, and it needs specialist handling. Treated wood, the greenish lumber used for decks and fences, has to be managed as hazardous waste in California, so an old deck tear-out needs its own plan.
Propane tanks and other compressed gas cylinders are out too. When a material has you guessing, put it past your account manager before it goes over the rail.
