The 10-Yard Dumpster is the right container for broken patio slabs, stucco, tile and dirt. Dense East County material fills a weight allowance well before it fills the walls.
The 15-Yard Dumpster covers a garage emptied out, a bathroom gutted, or one slope of roofing coming off a single-story house.
The 20-Yard Dumpster is the size most El Cajon homeowners end up with. It swallows a whole-house cleanout or a multi-room remodel without a second haul.
The 30-Yard Dumpster fits additions, larger teardowns and mixed debris from framing and drywall work.
The 40-Yard Dumpster is our biggest container and belongs on commercial demolition and tenant improvement work along the Main Street and Broadway corridors.

On private property such as your own driveway or an enclosed job site, El Cajon does not make you apply for anything to have a container delivered.
The public right-of-way is a different matter, and El Cajon is tighter than its neighbors. The city code says no person may use or occupy any part of a public sidewalk, street or alley for any purpose other than normal pedestrian or vehicular traffic, except as the law or a council resolution allows. There is one published way through: the city code lets the public works department approve use of a sidewalk, street or alley when that use goes with building construction for which a building permit has already been issued.
So in practice a street placement in El Cajon needs an open building permit behind it and a public works sign-off in front of it. No fee and no time limit are published for that approval, which means it is a conversation rather than a form.
El Cajon also regulates containers themselves, separately from collection. The code reaches any container at or above six feet by five feet by eighteen feet, which is roll-off territory, and it gives the city the power to post a notice on a container and require its removal within twenty four hours. After one such notice to an owner, the city may remove a container immediately, store it, and charge the owner the impound and storage costs.
That rule is the single most important thing to settle before a delivery date in El Cajon. Your account manager will confirm with the city how it applies to your address and your project before anything is scheduled.
Ordinary construction and household debris is fine: framing, drywall, stucco, roofing, flooring, cabinets, fencing, furniture and cleanout junk.
California keeps a long list of material out of the trash altogether. Paint, solvents, motor oil and oil filters, every type of battery, fluorescent tubes and other mercury-containing lamps, and electronics all have to be handled separately. CalRecycle publishes the statewide list of what is banned from the trash, and it binds you as the generator, not only the landfill.
Asbestos, liquids of any kind, pressurized cylinders and contaminated soil are also out. Older El Cajon houses are exactly the age where asbestos can turn up in flooring mastic and duct wrap, so test before you demolish rather than after.
The receiving landfill publishes its own refusal list on top of the state one, and a single banned item can get a whole load turned away at the scale.
When something is borderline, ask your account manager before it goes in. That call costs nothing and a rejected load costs a day.

El Cajon has no landfill inside the city, so every container leaves town to be tipped.
The nearest public option is the Miramar Landfill and Recycling Center at 5180 Convoy St., San Diego, CA 92111, run by the City of San Diego Environmental Services Department. Its own landfill page gives business hours of Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the site closed on Sundays and on six public holidays, and self-dumping vehicles accepted until 4:30 p.m. The state's facility record lists the site as active and permitted with the city as operator.
Closer to El Cajon, the Sycamore Landfill sits on Mast Boulevard at West Hills Parkway, just north of the city. It is run by a private company rather than a public agency, so we name it by location only and leave the pricing and acceptance questions to the operator.
Which site your load goes to depends on the material, the day and the queue at the scale. Your account manager confirms the destination before delivery, and that single answer usually settles the disposal charge too.
