Most debris from a remodel, roofing job, or cleanout can go in. California's disposal bans and the facility that processes your load set the limits.
The state bans many household items from the trash. CalRecycle lists fluorescent tubes, all batteries, oil-based paint, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides, antifreeze, motor oil, and aerosol cans that aren't empty. Tires, propane tanks, and wood treated with chemical preservatives are also on the list.
Electronics count, too. TVs, monitors, computers, printers, microwaves, and cell phones can't be thrown away in California, so set them aside for recycling.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos don't belong in a standard dumpster. Older homes can have asbestos in flooring, siding, or roofing, so have those materials tested before demolition.
