Most construction and cleanout debris can go in your container. California's trash bans set the main limits.
CalRecycle, the state's recycling agency, keeps a list of waste banned from the trash. It includes every type of battery, fluorescent lamps, TVs, computers, monitors, and cell phones. Paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, antifreeze, and pool chemicals are on it, too, along with tires, asbestos, and treated wood.
Hazardous waste, liquids, fuel, and gas cylinders can't go in a standard dumpster either.
For household hazardous waste and electronics, Cudahy points residents to Los Angeles County's program. Call 888-CLEAN-LA, or 800-238-0172, for drop-off dates and locations.
