Most remodeling and cleanout debris is fine to load. California's disposal laws and the facility that takes your load set the limits.
CalRecycle says it's illegal to put hazardous waste in the garbage, down storm drains, or on the ground. That covers all batteries, fluorescent and LED lights, paint, aerosol cans, solvents, pesticides, and herbicides. It also covers antifreeze, motor oil, filters, and tires, along with asbestos and chemically treated wood.
Electronics are on the list too, including TVs, monitors, computers, printers, and phones. So are compressed gas cylinders and anything with mercury, like old thermostats and thermometers.
Carlsbad residents can take these items to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at 1145 East Taylor St. in Vista. It's open Saturdays only, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and drop-off is free. Door-to-door pickup costs $10, and it's free for residents 65 and older. Call 800-714-1195 with questions.
If you're unsure about an item, ask your account manager before it goes in the container.
