Lumber, drywall, roofing, flooring, cabinets, doors, carpet, and ordinary cleanout material are all fine. California's hazardous waste rules and the city facility's own list set the limits.
Hazardous waste and liquids are out. That covers paint, solvents, fuel, motor oil, pesticides, pool chemicals, aerosols, and anything that can run out of a load. California keeps these in a separate household hazardous waste stream, and the city runs a drop-off for its own residents instead.
Treated wood is the local surprise. The city facility will not take treated wood of any kind, including treated fencing, treated decking, railroad ties, and pilings. If you are pulling out an old fence or deck, that material needs its own plan, so flag it before the work starts.
Asbestos, which turns up in older Sunnyvale ceilings and ducting, is handled under separate state rules and never rides in a mixed container. Tires and large appliances are accepted at the city facility but are charged per item.
The code also bars burning waste and bars packing a container so tightly that the contents will not fall out under their own weight when it is lifted. If you are not sure about a material, ask your account manager before it goes in.
