Most debris from a remodel, roof job, or cleanout can go in your container. California's trash bans and the landfill's own rules decide the rest.
CalRecycle says it's illegal to throw hazardous waste in the garbage. The state's list includes every kind of battery, fluorescent and LED bulbs, paint, pesticides, antifreeze, motor oil, and tires. Treated wood, propane tanks, and electronics like TVs, monitors, and laptops also stay out of the trash.
Hazardous waste, liquids, solvents, fuel, and asbestos aren't allowed in a standard dumpster either. Households in the Authority's service area can drop off hazardous waste at no charge at the Madison Lane facility in Salinas, within set limits.
The landfill won't take ammonia-based appliances at all, and it charges per unit for refrigerators and other appliances with refrigerant. List tires, mattresses, and appliances when you book. Your account manager can tell you how to handle anything you're unsure about.
