California publishes a statewide banned-from-trash list, and it is broad. Fluorescent lamps and tubes, metal halide and sodium vapor lamps, and all batteries of every type including car batteries are out. Electronic devices are out, which covers televisions, monitors, laptops, computer towers, printers, radios, microwave ovens and phones. Solvent-based paints, latex paint, reactive and explosive materials, acids, oxidizers and bases including some pool chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, part-used aerosol cans, silver-bearing photo waste and PCB-containing transformers and capacitors are all on the state's list as well. You can read the whole thing on CalRecycle's own page.
Beyond the state list, keep liquids, fuel, used motor oil, asbestos, pressurized cylinders and sharps out of any container.
Lomita adds a definitional point that helps you on a container job. The City's own code treats construction and demolition bins, roll-offs and low-boys as a class of their own, separate from the commercial bins used for ordinary trash, and keeps them outside the weekly collection duty. That is why a project container stays a project container here.
Anything you are unsure about, raise it with your account manager before it goes in rather than after the truck has gone.
