Ordinary construction, demolition and household debris is acceptable in a South Pasadena container. California draws the exclusions more tightly than most states, and on housing of this age two of them come up constantly.
Asbestos is the first. South Pasadena's building stock is largely pre-1950, and pipe lagging, resilient floor tile, roofing felt, textured ceiling coating and plaster can all carry it. In California a suspect material needs survey and licensed abatement before anything is loaded, so that sequence sets the container date rather than the other way around.
Lead paint is the second, and it sits on the same houses. On a pre-1978 structure it brings its own contractor requirements and its own waste handling.
Hazardous material is out of any container regardless: fuels, solvents, wet paint, pesticides, pool chemicals, automotive fluids, pressurized cylinders and anything carrying PCBs. California also keeps electronics, batteries, fluorescent tubes and mercury-containing devices out of a standard load as universal waste, and treated wood has its own route.
Tires, mattresses and appliances with refrigerant each carry separate handling. Declare them when you book and the cost and the route are agreed in advance.
Green waste is worth a separate mention here because of the tree canopy. Trunk wood, large limbs and stumps are heavy, they have their own recovery outlets, and they are usually cheaper kept out of a mixed construction load.
