Most household and construction debris can go in your container. California's rules and the county landfill that takes your load set the limits.
CalRecycle keeps a statewide list of wastes banned from the trash. It includes fluorescent tubes, all batteries, paint, solvents, antifreeze, motor oil, tires, asbestos, propane tanks, electronics like TVs and monitors, and wood treated with chemical preservatives.
Treated wood matters here. Orange County takes it at two of its landfills, but not at Olinda Alpha, the one closest to Placentia. If you're tearing out an old deck or fence, tell us so it can be handled the right way.
County landfills also refuse tires, travel and utility trailers, and marine flares. They accept appliances from residents but not from haulers, so keep appliances out of your container.
For paint, batteries, and other household chemicals, the county's hazardous waste center at 1071 N. Blue Gum Street in Anaheim is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
